Water levels of the Upper Rhine km 362.0-498.5

The measuring area consisted of the western and eastern banks of the Rhine and extended from Maximiliansau (river km 362.07) to Mainz (river km 498.47). Additionally, the junctions of the Main, Neckar and the Lamperheimer, Stockstadt-Erfelden and Nackenheimer cut-off branches were measured. The level was also connected to the official elevation network.

Task

For the observations, Trimble (Dini 03) digital levels were used. The Invar staves were calibrated prior to the measurements. The observation method used consisted of leveling from the center with equidistant targets. Depending on the topographical conditions, the target distances extended up to 40 meters, with the target distance difference between foresight and backsight never exceeding 1 m.

A heavy base plate (6 kg) was used for the level staff change points. Readings at the instrument locations took place through alternating observation through the fore and back sights.

Services

  • Double-leveling procedure
  • Inclusion of benchmarks beyond the main line of sight using branch lines (double-leveling)
  • Crossing of smaller rivers and confluences using simplified water-crossing techniques
  • Conventional water-crossing leveling for rivers and junctions wider than 80 m
  • Calculation of uniform elevation reference for both banks of the Rhine
  • Connection of leveling network to state elevation network
  • Addition of German Federal Institute of Hydrology measuring data to calculate loop closure
